                                  When to Use a Jack-Hammer

“. . .He will do it. . .” (Psalm 37:5)

Disappointment comes to visit from time to time.  Disappointment usually brings his two cousins: Discouragement and Despondency.  These unwelcome visitors must receive an appropriate reception when they seek to come through our front door.

First, you must determine that they cannot stay.  It is not a time to be polite. You must come directly to the point without hesitation. If Discouragement somehow gets into your front lobby, decisive action is required.

I have learned the hard way in over 50 years of walking with the Lord that if I allow myself to remain discouraged, I am committing a huge mistake. Discouragement is like a tumor that keeps growing. In time, it becomes a cancer that eats away the precious internal life.

Secondly, respond  with a proclamation of a promise found in the Word. I recommend speaking a chosen Scripture out loud. Become militant in this. Yes. Militant. The “violent take the Kingdom by force” (Matthew 11:12).  Fighting discouragement is not for the faint of heart. If you are timid in this matter, then realize that the Lord wants to toughen your skin and make you more resilient. Do not be surprised that the life of the disciple is described as a fight (II Tim 4:7); a war (Eph 6:10-18) and a race to be run (II Tim 4:7). Fighting and running require endurance. Endurance is precisely what the Lord wants to build within us.

Discouragement requires a firm response. Recently, the enemy had been relentless in trying to get me stuck in the mire of discouragement. I had been facing a very disappointing development. A friend suggested that I take the Word of God and stand on top of the situation and drive that Scripture home “like a Jack-Hammer.”

"Like a Jack-Hammer” he said. I took his advice and chose a phrase from the amazing Psalm 37 - “He will do it.”  The context makes that phrase all the more astounding. Essentially, the Lord makes a promise that if we delight in Him and commit our way to Him, He will literally give to us the desires of our heart. “He will do it” I said over and over. I refused to give up until the light came through. I spoke it out loud along with the Scriptures that surround that phrase.  I was taking the Sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17&18) and jabbing it forcefully into the devil’s torso. (I like to imagine what happens in the invisible spiritual realm – I hope you don’t mind my graphic illustration!)

I knew that “the desires of my heart” must be subject to the larger Scriptural context and that the Lord is in the process of purifying my desires. However, the Lord is determined to keep His promise. “HE WILL DO IT” became my ardent battle cry – My Jack-Hammer.

I have chosen to keep fighting until my final breath. Discouragement must not be allowed to rot my insides, blur my vision, and blunt the edge of my sword.    “HE WILL DO IT”
