Up Close and Personal
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. . . .and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them. . .” (Revelation 21:1&3)
Have you ever thought how wonderful it would have been to be present when Jesus was on the earth? You could have heard Him teach; watch Him heal desperately sick people; observe His interaction with all kinds of individuals; ask Him questions; experience His resurrection in person. Yes, that would have been amazing, yet God has something better planned for you and me.
You and I will be up close and personal with God Himself. Notice how emphatic the text is. God will not only dwell among His people but “God Himself will be among them” (vs 3). The point is repeated and driven home like a jack-hammer!
I think it is safe to assume that this new level of nearness includes the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. There are a great number of details we have not been given about this most incredible experience. What will such an experience be like? Not only will we be holding hands with the Father, but we will able to take a stroll and dine with Him. These kind of experiences will become regular encounters. Perhaps Jesus will cook some fish for breakfast as He did for His disciples in John 21! Even if there are millions of saints all around us, God, the infinite One, will be up close and personal with each one. Only an infinite and all-powerful Being is capable of such wonders.
Even if I stretch my mind and heart to the maximum, I cannot begin to come close to imagining the reality of this description of our future relationship with God. The Jesus of 2000 years ago had limitations. He dwelt in a human body of skin, bone and muscle. He was still God in the flesh. But He took on those limitations in order to become a blood sacrifice and a sympathetic High Priest.
In the ages to come, those limitations will be removed. His infinite capacities will be in full operation. Our humble and fragile bodies of flesh will have been transformed – supernaturally capable of enjoying the Infinite Lover of our soul face-to-face. “. . .God Himself will be among them. . .”
